NOVEMBER 19TH, 2008
DCD DIRECTOR, MIRIAM ADAMS GUEST AT HELICONIAN CLUB

DCD Co-founder/Director Miriam Adams was invited to speak at the Toronto Heliconian Club on November 18th. The Club is an organization of women arts professionals and those with a long-term interest in the arts. Its members organize activities to generate awareness and advancement  of the arts within the broader community. Miriam spoke about her personal history as a dance artist, the initiation of various dance projects and programs with the late Lawrence Adams, what led to their founding of Dance Collection Danse, and DCD's many activities in promoting Canada's dance history. Established in 1909, the Heliconian Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2009 and can claim within its historic ranks various dance members whose archival materials are among the collections at DCD; these include Alison Sutcliffe, Jean Macpherson, Bunny Lang and Janet Baldwin. Members were thrilled when Miriam unveiled an oil painting, donated to DCD in the late 1980s, of Jean Macpherson giving a recital with her young students all wearing Degas-like costumes dancing in the very hall where the Club members and their guests were gathered for the speech.
